On March 26, the first batch of 895 pure electric buses exported by Zhongtong Bus to Chile held a launch ceremony in Liaocheng. The order, consisting entirely of Zhongtong N Series city buses, represents the single largest batch of Chinese buses ever exported to Chile.
These buses will soon embark on their journey overseas, integrating into Santiago’s public transportation system to boost the city’s “green energy” capacity and usher in a new era of eco-friendly mobility for its residents.
Strategic Green Expansion: Zhongtong Bus Cultivates the Chilean Market for 18 Years
Since entering the Chilean market in 2007, Zhongtong Bus has spent nearly two decades establishing a strong presence. From northern Chile’s copper mining regions to urban centers like Antofagasta and Santiago, Zhongtong buses now operate across cities, beaches, and mines, becoming one of the most recognizable bus brands in the country.
In recent years, Chile has prioritized environmental protection and sustainable development, aiming to achieve “carbon neutrality by 2050” and accelerate the electrification of public transport. Leveraging its expertise in new energy vehicles, Zhongtong has seized opportunities to support this transition.
- In 2021 and 2022, Zhongtong delivered consecutive batches of H12 Plus pure electric premium tourist buses to Chile, providing commuter services for the country’s copper mines. These orders set a record as China’s largest single export of pure electric tourist buses at the time.
- In 2023, 40 Zhongtong pure electric buses were deployed in Antofagasta, making it the first major Chilean city outside Santiago to adopt large-scale electric bus operations.
- In May 2024, Zhongtong N Series pure electric buses were delivered to Lanco, O’Higgins Region, witnessed by Chilean President Gabriel Boric.
- In 2025, another batch of H12 Plus premium tourist buses will reinforce Zhongtong’s dominance in Chile’s tourism transport sector.
With the delivery of these 895 N Series buses, Zhongtong’s electric vehicles will play a pivotal role in transforming Chile’s public transportation system.
Competing in a Global Market
Chile’s competitive market hosts numerous international bus brands, including European and American manufacturers. To meet the country’s high standards for both quantity and quality, Zhongtong secured the 895-unit order through its robust technological expertise and tailored solutions.
As a pioneer in new energy bus R&D and deployment, Zhongtong possesses internationally leading technologies across battery systems, motor control, and vehicle integration. Innovations in energy efficiency, powertrain matching, and control systems ensure high reliability and low energy consumption.
Additionally, Zhongtong conducted comprehensive research on Chilean road conditions, traffic regulations, operational needs, and passenger habits to customize its vehicles.
Global Expansion
Since 2024, Zhongtong has exported new energy buses to Portugal, Singapore, Denmark, the UAE, and other countries. By targeting high-end markets, the company continues to expand its global footprint.
Commitment to Green Innovation
“Zhongtong will strengthen technological innovation to build competitive products, elevate China’s reputation in ‘green manufacturing,’ and contribute Chinese wisdom to global transportation decarbonization,” said Wang Xingfu, Party Committee Secretary and Chairman of Zhongtong Bus.
Customs Support for Export Efficiency
At the launch event, Hou Jianning, Deputy Commissioner of Liaocheng Customs, highlighted support measures: “We provided dedicated customs clearance services, enabling immediate inspection and release for these exports. Through ‘policy outreach,’ we guided the company to utilize the China-Chile Free Trade Agreement (FTA), securing preferential certificates of origin for the first 300 buses. This allows zero-tariff treatment in Chile, significantly reducing export costs. Moving forward, we will optimize customs processes to further facilitate green vehicle exports.”
This achievement underscores Zhongtong’s role in driving global sustainable transportation through innovation and strategic partnerships.
