In recent months, China has witnessed a significant increase in the export of used buses and commercial vehicles, driven by rising international demand for cost-effective public transportation solutions. According to data released by China’s General Administration of Customs, used vehicle exports, including buses and coaches, rose by 42% year-on-year in the first half of 2024, with Southeast Asia, Africa, and Latin America emerging as key destination markets.
The surge is largely attributed to improving certification standards and streamlined export procedures introduced by Chinese authorities in 2023, which have enhanced the global competitiveness of China-sourced used vehicles. Many exporting companies based in Guangdong, Zhejiang, and Shandong provinces have reported strong interest in mid-life buses (8–12 years old) that are well-maintained and comply with international safety and emissions guidelines.
In parallel, online trade platforms such as Alibaba.com and Made-in-China.com have seen a spike in global search queries for terms like “used bus for sale near me,” indicating growing buyer intent from small fleet operators and municipal transport agencies seeking affordable alternatives to new models.
Industry analysts note that the trend aligns with broader sustainability efforts, as reusing commercial vehicles extends their lifecycle and reduces manufacturing-related carbon emissions. Meanwhile, Chinese exporters are expanding inspection and refurbishment services to meet overseas compliance requirements, further boosting buyer confidence.
With infrastructure development accelerating in emerging economies, the global market for reliable, low-cost used buses is expected to expand further in 2024–2025, positioning China as a pivotal supplier in the international used commercial vehicle trade.
