In recent months, China has witnessed a significant increase in the export of used commercial vehicles, particularly diesel buses, as international buyers seek cost-effective transportation options. According to data released by China’s General Administration of Customs, exports of used trucks and buses rose by 37% year-on-year in the first half of 2024, with growing demand from markets in Africa, Southeast Asia, and Latin America.
One of the most sought-after categories is the “used diesel bus for sale under $10,000,” a segment in which Chinese exporters have become dominant players. These buses, typically sourced from domestic public transit fleets and refurbished to meet international safety standards, are being sold through online trade platforms and specialized export dealers.
In Guangdong and Zhejiang provinces, several export hubs have emerged where used buses are inspected, repaired, and prepared for overseas shipment. Buyers from Nigeria, Kenya, the Philippines, and Bolivia have been particularly active, citing the affordability and durability of Chinese-sourced diesel buses.
“Many developing countries are expanding their public transportation networks but face tight budgets,” said Lin Xiaoming, a senior trade analyst at the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade. “A reliable diesel bus under $10,000 offers a practical solution, and Chinese suppliers are well-positioned to meet this demand.”
International buyers can now access these vehicles through major B2B platforms such as Alibaba.com and Made-in-China.com, where listings for used diesel buses priced under $10,000 have increased by over 50% since the beginning of the year. Most units are between 5 and 8 years old, equipped with Euro III or Euro IV engines, and undergo pre-shipment inspections to ensure compliance with destination country regulations.
The Chinese government has also streamlined export procedures for used commercial vehicles, introducing certification programs that verify vehicle condition and emissions standards. This move has boosted buyer confidence and facilitated smoother customs clearance abroad.
With rising fuel efficiency standards and growing emphasis on sustainable transport, some exporters are also offering retrofitting services, including engine upgrades and maintenance packages, to extend the operational life of these buses.
As global demand for affordable mass transit solutions continues to grow, China’s role as a leading exporter of used diesel buses is expected to strengthen, offering practical transportation alternatives for budget-conscious operators worldwide.
