China’s Used Bus Export Market Grows Amid Rising Global Demand

According to recent data from China’s General Administration of Customs, used bus exports from China increased by 23% year-on-year in the first half of 2024, reaching over 8,500 units.

The surge is largely attributed to competitive used bus prices, which typically range from USD 8,000 to USD 25,000 depending on model, age, and condition. Chinese pre-owned buses, primarily sourced from urban transit fleets undergoing fleet upgrades, are known for their durability and relatively low maintenance costs—making them an attractive option for developing countries aiming to expand public transportation networks without high capital expenditure.

Major export destinations include Nigeria, Kenya, Bangladesh, and Colombia. In Nigeria, for example, municipal transport authorities have purchased over 1,200 used Chinese buses since early 2023 to modernize city transit systems. Similarly, in Vietnam and the Philippines, local operators are increasingly turning to China-sourced used buses to meet rising commuter demands.

Industry analysts note that transparent vehicle history reporting, improved pre-shipment inspections, and streamlined logistics through China’s international rail and port networks have enhanced buyer confidence. Additionally, several Chinese export firms now offer extended warranties and technical support, further boosting market appeal.

With global pressure to improve sustainable urban mobility, affordable and functional used buses from China are playing a crucial role in shaping cost-effective public transport solutions worldwide.
