China’s Exports of Second-hand Buses Gain Momentum Amid Global Demand for Sustainable Transport

In recent months, Chinese manufacturers and exporters of second-hand commercial vehicles have reported a surge in overseas orders, particularly for used city buses. With increasing global emphasis on cost-effective and eco-friendly public transportation, reconditioned buses from China are becoming a preferred choice for transit operators in developing countries and budget-conscious municipalities in the United States.

According to data released by China’s Ministry of Commerce, exports of used buses rose by 23% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2024. A significant portion of these shipments was destined for North and Latin America, with inquiries from U.S.-based buyers showing notable growth. The trend aligns with a broader international shift toward sustainable urban mobility and circular economy practices.

In the United States, local transit authorities and private operators are actively exploring options to modernize aging fleets without incurring high costs. Used city buses, especially low-floor and CNG-powered models refurbished in China, offer a reliable and economical alternative. Major export hubs such as Guangzhou, Qingdao, and Tianjin have strengthened certification and logistics services to meet U.S. import standards, including FMVSS compliance and emissions requirements.

Industry experts note that Chinese exporters are now offering comprehensive after-sales support, including spare parts supply and technical guidance, which enhances the appeal of second-hand buses in competitive markets. Additionally, digital trade platforms have streamlined the purchasing process, enabling U.S. buyers to inspect vehicle histories, arrange inspections, and complete transactions remotely.

As U.S. cities seek affordable solutions to expand public transit access, the availability of high-quality used city buses from China presents a strategic opportunity. Trade facilitation initiatives between Chinese exporters and American importers are expected to grow, reinforcing cross-border cooperation in the green transportation sector.
