China’s Used Bus Exports Surge Amid Global Demand for Affordable Public Transport

In 2024, Chinese exporters have reported a significant increase in overseas shipments of used buses, driven by rising demand from developing countries seeking cost-effective public transportation solutions. According to data released by China’s General Administration of Customs, exports of second-hand buses from China reached 3,200 units in the first half of the year, a 41% year-on-year increase.

Key markets include nations across Southeast Asia, Africa, and Latin America, where municipal transport operators are turning to refurbished, well-maintained used buses sourced from China to modernize aging fleets without straining limited budgets. One leading exporter in Shandong Province reported a backlog of orders from Nigeria, Bangladesh, and Peru, citing demand for 12-meter diesel and electric hybrid models. “Many buyers are transit agencies looking to expand routes or replace decommissioned fleets,” said the company’s international sales manager. “Our used buses offer proven durability and lower operating costs.”
