China’s Used Bus Exports Surge Amid Global Demand for Affordable Public Transport

In 2024, Chinese exporters have reported a significant increase in overseas shipments of used buses, driven by rising demand from developing countries seeking cost-effective public transportation solutions. According to data released by China’s General Administration of Customs, exports of second-hand buses from China reached 3,200 units in the first half of the year, a 41% year-on-year increase.

Key markets include nations across Southeast Asia, Africa, and Latin America, where municipal transport operators are turning to refurbished, well-maintained used buses sourced from China to modernize aging fleets without straining limited budgets. Major export hubs such as Guangzhou, Qingdao, and Tianjin have seen a surge in vehicle inspection and logistics activity linked to used bus sales.

Industry analysts note that many of the exported buses were previously operated in Chinese cities under strict maintenance schedules, ensuring reliability. After thorough refurbishment and compliance checks, these vehicles are now being sold as “used bus for sale” options with competitive pricing, often 40–60% lower than new models.

One leading exporter in Shandong Province reported a backlog of orders from Nigeria, Bangladesh, and Peru, citing demand for 12-meter diesel and electric hybrid models. “Many buyers are transit agencies looking to expand routes or replace decommissioned fleets,” said the company’s international sales manager. “Our used buses offer proven durability and lower operating costs.”

International buyers can access these vehicles through specialized trade platforms and port-based dealers, with services including pre-shipment inspections, export documentation, and shipping coordination. With growing interest in sustainable urban mobility and budget-conscious infrastructure investment, the global market for used buses from China is expected to remain robust through 2025.
